“Bij het fotograferen van dieren brengen we vaak veel tijd door met wachten — tot een element in het beeld verandert of een extra factor zich aandient. Meestal wacht je tot het onderwerp beweegt. Soms werkt een beeld echter juist doordat het onderwerp stil blijft. Dan moeten andere elementen het verschil maken. In dit geval zorgden de wind door de manen van de leeuw, de rustige achtergrond van de Kopjes en de korte lichtstreep over zijn gezicht ervoor dat het beeld meer werd dan enkel een leeuw in rust.”Photography, Serengeti – Tanzania.

“When working with animals, we spend a lot of time waiting for a certain component of the frame to change, or waiting for an additional element to join the scene. A lot of the time, it involves waiting for the subject to move. But there can be cases where it works even when the subject is stationary. This, however, relies on other components within the frame compensating for the lack of movement. The wind blowing the lion’s mane, the clean backdrop created by the face of the Kopjes and the brief streak of light that shone across the lion’s face were all factors that helped make this frame become more than just a lion taking a break.”
